Three gangsters arrested for robbing three-wheelers

Grandpass Police said that three members of an organised gang who conducted robberies in many parts of the country by intoxicating the drivers of hired three-wheelers have been have been arrested. The robbers have stolen valuables including gold worth over Rs.10 million.

Police said that there is no information so far regarding two three-wheeler drivers and their two-wheelers in the Welimada area who were caught by the suspects.

Police have found a stock of gold worth nearly Rs.1.1 million, which the suspects robbed from a three-wheeler driver after they intoxicated him in the Peliyagoda area. On September 27, the driver’s son complained to the Grandpass Police saying that his father was unconscious and lying on the ground near a private hospital in the Grandpass area.

After receiving treatment, the three-wheeler driver gave a statement to police on September 2 and said while driving his three-wheeler from Kelaniya to Bloemendhal.Two from another three wheeler stopped him and asked him to take them to Elakanda in Wattala. On the way, they stopped in front of a fast food outlet and bought Kola Kenda. They gave the driver a glass of the drink and after that, he felt dizzy. Then the driver asked one of the three people in the vehicle who had the driver’s licence to drive it.

The driver had further given statements to Police that he did not know what had happened after that and regained consciousness in the hospital. By then, he found out that there the gold rings and the bracelet he had was missing. During the long interrogation conducted after the arrest of the three suspects, the organised gang revealed that they had intoxicated three-wheeler drivers and robbed them in Ruwanwella, Biyagama, Bandarawela, Maharagama, Dam Street, Veyangoda, Boralasgamuwa, Grandpass, Welimada and Ruwanwella. Police say that the suspects have been able to identify the group that robbed them of their valuables including gold, cash and mobile phones after giving them drinks.

It has been further revealed that the arrested suspects are addicted to drugs and gambling. They are residents of Nittambuwa and Thihariya.

Investigations are being conducted on the instructions of Gandpass Police OIC Chief Inspector H.H. Harrison.
