Kuliyapitiya SSP Mahesh Kumarasinghe yesterday said that three suspects were arrested by the Police yesterday evening and six more suspects are to be arrested in connection with threatening Puttalam district Parliamentarian Ajith Gihan during a visit to a garment factory in Bingiriya. Two suspects were remanded till January 7 upon being produced before the Hettipola Magistate. The suspects were arrested based on a complaint made by Puttalam district Parliamentarian Ajith Gihan to the Chilaw Police.
The Parliamentarian in his compliant had stated that he and Kurunegala District MP Ajith Basnayake were threatened and their vehicles were attacked during a visit to a garment factory in the Bingiriya area. The incident had occurred on the morning of December 30 when they visited a private garment factory in Bingiriya. The factory’s transport workers protested against the MPs, claiming that the new MPs were taking actions that threatened their jobs.
In the past, politicians from this area have taken various measures to secure this transport contract. At one point, the factory owner even complained to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa about the issue, he said.
When questioned about this incident by the media, Parliamentarian Ajith Gihan stated that his discussion with the factory management was aimed at regulating the transport service and freeing it from extortionists. He also mentioned that he has filed a complaint with the Police and has the evidence to prove all related matters.
