Time for LG Polls was spent on securing people’s lives – President

President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said, although postponing the Local Government Elections has been pointed out as a violation of the fundamental rights of the people, he does not regret it because elections could not be held then as time had to be devoted to securing people’s lives.

He stressed that he respects both, people’s right to vote as well as people’s right to live. Pointing out that in the programme to bring the country’s economy to a stable level, every hour had a great value, the President added if that time was spent on holding the Local Government Elections, it would not have been possible to bring the country’s economy to a stable level today.

The President was addressing the National Conference of the Nawa Janatha Peramuna held at the Maharagama Youth Service Council Auditorium yesterday afternoon.

The President pointed out that the people cannot continue their daily life without gas, medicine, food and fuel and added that he had committed himself in the last two years to protect those fundamental rights of the people and if necessary in the future too he will take any decision to safeguard those rights.

President Wickremesinghe further stated that it has been decided to hold the General Election after the Presidential Election and the money needed for that too have to be raised and after that the Provincial Council Election and then the Local Government Elections are expected to be held.

The President went on to say that the country’s economy had recovered from the crisis and has been gradually getting stronger in the last two years and with the current momentum indications are that it will get stronger in the coming year. The Nawa Janatha Peramuna leader Sugeeshwara Bandara also addressed the gathering.
