No bail : Namal Rajapaksa further remanded

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has been further remanded until October 13 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to the controversial SriLankan Airlines Airbus aircraft procurement. Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, was brought before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today (29) as a suspect in the investigation being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa in court to testify in Lalith-Kugan disappearance case

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appeared before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today to testify in the case concerning the 2011 disappearance of activists Lalith Kumar Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganandhan in Jaffna. In August, the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court ordered Rajapaksa to testify via video link from the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on September 29 in the case concerning the 2011 disappearance of the two activists.

Court of Appeal issues arrest warrant for Gnanasara Thera

The Court of Appeal today (29) issued a warrant for the arrest of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, ordering that he be produced before court on October 1. The warrant was issued after Gnanasara Thera failed to appear before court when a motion filed by the Attorney General was taken up today. The Attorney General has sought an order from the Court of Appeal to enforce the prison sentence imposed on Gnanasara Thera, following the revocation of the presidential pardon previously granted to him.

SC orders Fowzie to pay Rs. 6.6 million and publish apology in newspapers

The Supreme Court has ruled that former Minister A.H.M. Fowzie violated fundamental rights by using for personal purposes a vehicle provided by the Government of the Netherlands for Sri Lanka’s disaster management activities. The Court ordered Fowzie to pay Rs. 6.6 million to the Consolidated Fund. He must pay Rs. 1,664,334.93 within one month and the balance within two months.

122 Colombo Metro buses launched; Jaffna, Kandy and Galle service plans announced

A new fleet of 122 Metro buses was officially launched today (29) to operate along seven routes in the Western Province, as part of a government initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Colombo and improving the quality of public transport. The buses were launched at the Thalangama Metro Bus Depot under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and will operate on designated routes and schedules centred around Colombo
