Sri Lanka secured $1 Bn FDI in AKD’s first year – Minister

Sri Lanka has received $1.015 billion in foreign direct investment during the first year of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s term, Minister Bimal Rathnayake told Parliament. He said the investments, which span sectors such as the economy, education, and culture, reflect realized funds, not just pledges. The figures can be verified with the Board of Investment, he added.

ICE chemical containers were cleared through official Customs process : Minister

Two containers linked to crystal meth (ICE) production were cleared through official Customs procedures, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said, noting that both Customs and the CID have launched investigations. He said the suspension of SLPP membership for Sampath Manamperi, a former local councilor linked to the chemical seizure, was an acknowledgement by the party. Jayatissa said Manamperi, a former police constable and intelligence officer, is also a suspect in the past murder of MP Raviraj, and is currently wanted by authorities.

Money laundering case : Indictments filed against Keheliya & family

Colombo Chief Magistrate today ordered the termination of proceedings in the money laundering case against former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and his family, following the filing of indictments in the Colombo High Court. The defendants were instructed to appear before the High Court on scheduled dates. Rambukwella and his family are accused of acquiring assets worth over Rs. 97 million through illicit means during his ministerial tenure. All were released on bail after appearing in court.

Sri Lanka systematically protected murderers of journalists – Report

A new report by the International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) accuses Sri Lanka of systematically shielding the killers of journalists for over 25 years. Focusing on the 2000 assassination of BBC Jaffna reporter Nimalarajan Mylvaganam, the report highlights major investigative failures and ongoing impunity. It states that at least 44 journalists were killed between 2000 and 2010, with no perpetrators held accountable. The report also accuses political figures, including Douglas Devananda, of evading scrutiny, while many journalists continue to face threats, exile, or trauma without justice.

President’s Entitlements (Repeal) Bill to be debated tomorrow

Parliament will take up the second reading and debate of the President’s Entitlements (Repeal) Bill on Sept. 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., following a decision by the Parliamentary Business Committee. Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne earlier announced that the Supreme Court found no constitutional inconsistencies in the bill, allowing it to be passed with a simple majority.
