Plastic, including non-bio-degradable waste collected in the Victoria Reservoir near the Lewella Bridge
The Mahaweli Authority said that with the rain experienced, a number of tons of non-perishable waste including plastic bottles which had been disposed off within the environment in a haphazard manner, has collected in the Victoria Reservoir through the Mahaweli River.
This waste has collected near the Lewella Bridge and removal is being carried out under the initiative of Chief Engineer Vasantha Ehelapitiya of the Victoria Dam.
He said that even previously, a load of this type of waste plastic bottles and polythene had been removed using a boat.
Chief Dams and Mahaweli Reservoir (Director) DM Dharmadasa said that after the construction of the Lewella Bridge, a part of the old swinging (Sangili) bridge at that place had fallen on the water surface and plastic bottles and other wastes flowing along the waterways get stuck in them.
Although the Kandy Municipality has been informed and requested to remove the parts of the bridge in the water, he said that no steps have been taken at all to do so.
He said further that, anyhow, by disposing non-decaying waste to the environment in this way in a random manner, massive environmental damage occurs and people should act with responsibility where this is concerned.
