Lieutenant General Joel “JB” Vowell, Deputy Commanding General of US Army Pacific (USARPAC), arrived in Sri Lanka today (29) for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening military cooperation between the United States and Sri Lanka.
According to the US Embassy in Colombo, Lt. Gen. Vowell is the highest-ranking US Army officer to visit Sri Lanka, marking a milestone in growing Army-to-Army cooperation between the two countries.
His visit will continue until October 1 and will include meetings with senior Sri Lankan military officials.
Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening interoperability, military readiness and defence cooperation, including upcoming joint military exercises and capacity-building initiatives.
Cooperation on humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) will also feature in the discussions.
Lt. Gen. Vowell is also scheduled to address the next generation of military leaders on the role of professional military forces in supporting regional security and stability.
US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Eric Meyer said the visit reflects the growing security partnership between the two countries and their focus on training, interoperability and improving their ability to respond to crises.
The US Embassy said the visit also builds on the U.S.–Sri Lanka Land Forces Talks held in May and reflects continued U.S. engagement on security in the Indo-Pacific region. (Newswire)
