Health and Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana stated that his first objective is to create confidence in the health system among the people of Sri Lanka with the challenges that have arisen at present.
The minister stated this in a special discussion held with the members of Government Medical Officers’ Association at the Health Ministry yesterday (31).
The Minister said that the health sector in Sri Lanka is a stable health system and there is an excellent human resource working in it. It is not difficult to elevate this sector with a proper method and a proper vision. The Minister stated that he will take decisions without hesitation. He said that it is not possible to please everyone in making those decisions.
He emphasised that he has a problem as to how much positive things can be achieved and that it will take some time to see the quantity and quality of these activities.
The minister also made a request to protect the professional dignity of all of you and provide the necessary facilities for the same while working together for the improvement of the health system.
Government Medical Officers’ Association Secretary, Dr. Haritha Aluthge said that after some time, he is happy to have a minister who has an understanding of the health subject and thanked the minister for taking over this Ministry. Salaries of doctors, transport allowances, salaries and allowances received by intern doctors, positions and promotions of doctors, local and foreign training, problems in medical faculties, tenure, investigations and medicines were discussed here.
Health Ministry Secretary Janaka Chandragupta, Additional Secretaries Dr.Sunil De Alwis, Geetamani Karunaratne, Deputy Director Generals Dr.Lal Panapitiya, Dr.Sudath Dharmaratne, Dr.Priyantha Atapattu and doctors representing the Government Medical Officers’ Association were present.
