Tourism Ministry nod prerequisite for vehicle imports

State Minister for Finance Minister Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya says travel companies should first obtain approval from the Ministry of Tourism for the importation of 750 vans and 250 buses for the tourism sector based on the needs of the industry.

Subsequent to these approvals and recommendations, The Finance Ministry will recommend to the Import and Export Control Department to grant approval for the imports.

“We will also follow up the import procedure to ensure that these programs will be carried out in a transparent manner.”

The Minister said that despite restrictions on the import of vehicles, the government has authorized these imports to support the growing tourism industry. By allowing the importation of a new vehicle fleet to the tourism industry the country falls in line with the globally accepted principles of the world that vehicles older than 6 years are not used for the transportation of tourists.

“Only vehicles that are under ‘one year old’ will be allowed to be imported.”
