Tourist arrivals set to surpass 2.5 Mn in 2024

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, PC said for the first time in history, tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka may surpass 2.5 million in 2024.

He said that considering the tourist arrivals in the months of January and February this year compared to last year, it is clear that the target can be easily achieved.

The Minister was speaking as the chief guest at a celebration to mark the 30th anniversary of the Kandy Muslim Trade Association on Saturday.

Sabry said there were 1.5 million tourist arrivals to the country last year.

He added that while around 100,000 tourists visited the country in January last year, the number had grown to 210,000 in January this year and the total number of tourist arrivals in February 2023 had matched the number of tourists visiting the country in the first 10 days of 2024.

The Minister went on to say that while countries like Greece, Zimbabwe and Argentina, which faced serious economic crisis, took more than a decade to get out of that situation, Sri Lanka reached the relevant goals in a short period of two years and the leadership and plans of President Ranil Wickremesinghe played a big role in the country recovering from the economic crisis in such a short span of time.
