Two bodies of the children swept away by the floods on Tuesday (26) at Mavadippalli in Karaitivu, Ampara District, were recovered yesterday (27) morning.
This tragic incident took place when a tractor carrying 14 people, including 11 Arabic College students, was swept away by floodwaters at Mavadippalli in Karaitivu. The tractor driver, his assistant and 6 Madrasa children are still missing. Five children were rescued immediately when the tractor toppled.
The 6 missing children, aged 12 to 16 and residents of Sammanthurai are students of a Madrasa called Kashiful Uloom Arabic College in Nintavur, and were returning home.
The incident took place on the Sammanthurai-Karaitivu Main Road, where floodwaters usually overflow at this place, and people pay Rs 300-500 to be ferried across during inclement weather. Search operations are underway since this morning (27), with the involvement of the Tri-forces and local residents to recover the missing persons.
A tractor and two motorcycles were discovered during the search operation, while some students who were clinging to a high-voltage electric pole in the area were also rescued.
The recovered bodies are now at the Sammanthurai Base Hospital.
