The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on a businessman operating in Old Moor Street, Colombo 12, after a raid conducted by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) revealed he was illegally selling imported turmeric without proper importer, distributor, or supplier information.
In addition to the fine, the court ordered the confiscation and destruction of 19 packs of turmeric chunks, each weighing 25 kilograms, valued at approximately Rs. 2 million.
According to the CAA, the stock had been stored in violation of the law and was deemed unfit for human consumption at the time of judgment. (Newswire)
