Travis stuns India as Australia lifts 6th World Cup title

Opener Travis Head played a fantastic and fighting knock of 137 as Australia secured a superb 6-wicket victory over favourites India in the World Cup final cricket match played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad yesterday.

Skipper Pat Cummins’ team deserved all the credit for their sixth World Cup win since the 2015 victory under the leadership of Michael Clarke. The 29-year-old left-hander from South Australia, Travis Head, displayed exceptional batting to lead his team to a great win.

Marnus Labuschagne played a crucial supporting role, contributing to a remarkable fourth-wicket partnership of 192 runs in 215 balls, guiding Australia to the target with seven overs to spare.

Despite a crowd of 92,453 present at the final in Ahmedabad, many were left disappointed with India’s defeat, and some spectators left the venue even before the game concluded.

The day belonged to those who performed well, and Australia proved this theory right by restricting a formidable Indian team to 240 runs in 50 overs. While chasing a target of 241, the early wickets of openers David Warner (7), Mitchell Marsh (1), and Steve Smith (4) created a challenging situation. However, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne turned the tide with an outstanding partnership, placing immense pressure on the Indian bowlers and fielders. Travis Head’s brilliant knock of 137 off 120 balls included 15 fours and 4 sixes, while Marnus Labuschagne remained unbeaten with 58 off 110 balls, featuring 4 fours.

With seven overs to spare, Glenn Maxwell sealed the victory with a fortunate boundary off the first ball he faced from Mohammad Siraj’s bowling, leading to jubilant celebrations among the Australians.

After ten consecutive wins in this World Cup, India lost the crucial final, while Australia, having lost to India in their first league game in Chennai, came back strongly to dominate the final on Indian soil. Australia achieved a significant milestone by clinching victory in both the ICC Test Championship and the ICC ODI World Cup. Travis Head was rightfully named the Man of the Final for his outstanding innings, while Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli received the Player of the Series award.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins took a brave decision to field first and they executed the plan to put big pressure against strong Indian batting line up. Two openers Skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were unable to make a good start and the pair added only 30 runs in 4.2 overs. Gill the world cup debutant playing on his home grounds got out early caught by Adam Zampa at mid off the bowling of Mitchell Starc in 4.2 overs and the Indian spectators were stunned by his early dismissal. Skipper Rohit Sharma in his usual aggressive mood hit 6 and 4 off Glen Maxwell’ s over which was the last over of the first power play and then Travis Head took a superb running catch at cover position to dismiss Sharma off Maxwell and Sharma missed his half century out for 47 in 31 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes and India were 80 for 2 after first power play.
