Trinity College and Zahira College are set for a friendly showdown after their scheduled Under-19 Inter-Schools ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament fixture did not take place on July 29 at Maradana.
The Trinitians pulled out from the game a few hours before the kick-off citing medical reasons as they were unable to field their 1st XV with nearly 10 players down with suspected food poisoning.
Trinity Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara and Zahira Principal Trizvii Marikkar issued a joint statement stating that they are in the process of exploring options to organise a separate rugby encounter between the two schools in the future, considering the longstanding cordial relationship between the two institutions and the anticipation of the players from both schools.
“This in turn will enable the players from both schools to display a good game of rugby in the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship,” the statement further added.
But the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA), after an inquiry awarded victory with the full six points to Zahira, who moved to sixth place overall in the standings after the completion of the first-round segment.
“We hope with this latest move, the relationship enjoyed between the two institutions for nearly 100 years will further improve and become stronger.” “It is our sincere wish and prayer that this mutuality and collaboration would set an example to school sports in Sri Lanka,” the joint statement added.
