Mahiyanganaya Police arrested 12 suspects who were excavating a rock for artifact using a modern scanning machine that can detect substances under the ground on November 26.
A special police team arrested them while they were digging for artifact in Tissapura at the back of a garden.
Four of the suspects are residents of Mahiyangana and the rest are residents of Vaskaduwa, Matugama, Demayaluwa and Kalutara aged between 20 and 70 years.
The suspects told Police that there is a treasure underneath that rock and they detected it with the scanner.
The 12 suspects had been remanded for 14 days after being produced before Mahiyanganaya Court.
