Twenty eight complaints over using school students for election propaganda – NCPA

The National Childcare and Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has received 28 complaints over the use of children of schooling age for political propaganda work of the forthcoming Presidential Election so far. Accordingly, investigations are now being conducted by 12 investigation officers of the NCPA over those complaints and it is a punishable offence to misuse and tempt school students for political propaganda work these days by certain recognised political parties. National Childcare and Protection Authority requests all political parties, parents and school heads and teachers to refrain from using students for such illegal acts hereafter. Tough legal action would be taken against the errant politicians under the present law as students would undergo mental depression and mental harassment as a result. Not only that, these students would be tempted to commit violent acts against their political rivals too. Seven University undergraduates have already been arrested over violent acts during this election for violating the election laws, said Kurunegala District Child Protection Authority District Officer D. M. Herath speaking to the Daily News yesterday (16).

The Police Department has received about 358 complaints countrywide over the violations of the election law by now, Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa told the media yesterday.
