The Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday (7) arrested two suspects involved in money fraud by forging documents for a portion of five acres and two roods of coconut land in Unaveli Watta, Madurankuli in Puttalam. Two persons, aged 59 and 57, residing in Malambe, have been arrested for preparing fake documents for this coconut land worth Rs.20 million. One is a farmer and the other is a businessman.
Investigations regarding this land have been started based on a complaint by the General Secretary of the United National Party, former MP Palitha Range Bandara.
The Criminal Investigation Department stated that fake deeds were prepared and the land was sold to Range Bandara. According to the complaint, an investigation was conducted and a resident of Sinnapadu was first arrested on November 30, 2022.
Then on December 21, the CID also arrested a retired Deputy Director of the Central Environment Authority who was involved in this fraud. He is a resident of Malambe.
The Criminal Investigation Department arrested another suspect on January 28. He is a resident of Konthantivu, Sinnapadu in Puttalam.
The Criminal Investigation Department revealed that Rs. 4.7 million had been fraudulently obtained by forging deeds for 20 acres of this land and mortgaged it to a private bank. The Criminal Investigation Department stated that a 15-acre portion of the land had also been sold under a fake deed.
