Two dead, among 5 electrocuted in Namunukula Devala procession

Two youths died when the tractor that carried the deity in a procession at the Kandehena Dewala procession got entangled in a high-tension electric wire and were electrocuted in Namunukula.

The two young people who were travelling in the cart died and three others were seriously injured and were taken to hospital, the Police said.

In this accident, Ramesh (37) a resident of Namunukula, Butawatte and Panneer Selva Kumar (27) died and the three Gananda Selvam, M. Mahadevan and D.Rasaiah who were injured are undergoing treatment at the Passara District Hospital, Police said.

After parading through the villages of Kandehena, Devathura and Butawatta, the Radam procession was returning to the dewala at around 6.30 in the morning yesterday (24). Five people at the foot of the Radam were electrocuted when a high-voltage power line running over the road hit the cart which was being taken in a tractor. The Police said that two youths died on the spot and the three injured were brought to the Passara District Hospital. According to the Police all five persons were electrocuted.

According to the Police, the three who were injured due to electric shock are being treated at the Passara District Hospital and the bodies of the two deceased have been deposited in the mortuary of that hospital. A magisterial inquiry is scheduled to be conducted. Namunukula Police are investigating.
