Kegalle Acting Magistrate Nishanthi Abayaratne ordered that the two monks be remanded in custody until October 23, along with 850 grams of cannabis, 161 live bullets, one magazine, and one cartridge case, which were found in the upper floor of the monks’ abode of the Rambukkana Puwakmote, Sri Nagarukkharama Temple.
Police said that Alkegama Pannasara (70), who is the Chief Incumbent of the temple and Thismalpola Vijithasara (24), who is studying in the third year at the Homagama Buddhist and Pali University, have been remanded. Police told court that there had been a conflict between the arrested Chief Incumbent of the Temple and the Viharadhikari Thera for sometime.
The Chief Incumbent had submitted a complaint to the Rambukkana Police, the day before yesterday (19) informing them that there was a suspicious parcel in a room on the upper floor where the Viharadhikari Thera lives. According to the complaint, the Viharadhikari Thera had been brought to the Police and his statement had been recorded and Police officers had gone to the temple to check the suspicious parcel together with the Chief Incumbent Thera. Then he had showed Police, the room on the upper floor where the Viharadhikari resides. During the inspection of the suspicious parcel in that room, 161 live bullets, a magazine and an ammunition sheath were found. Police found a plastic cup containing 1 gram and 330 milligrams of cannabis on the table in the master’s room, and a small plastic box containing a set of equipment used to partake of illegal drugs.
