Two persons attempting to send six women to Dubai for employment on tourist visas instead of employment visas
were arrested by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Special Investigations Unit (SIU) recently.
The two suspects have been identified to be residents of Ashokapura in Mihintale and Welegoda in Matara. They had been arrested and produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on November 11 and were ordered to be remanded until yesterday (14).
Six women had arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to travel to Dubai for employment prospects using tourist visas on November 11. However, the Safe Migration Promotion Unit (SMPU) at the Katunayake Airport, had questioned the six women based on suspicion.
After questioning this group, the six passports of the women had been temporarily blacklisted by SLBFE officials to ensure the group is prevented from travelling overseas until the suspension is lifted and thereafter they had been turned away from the Airport. Negombo police are conducting investigations into the incident.
