Two in recent extortion racket arrested in Girandurukotte

Called parents asking to deposit money for hospitalised child

Had got more than Rs. 2.5 Mn credited to their bank accounts

The two main suspects of a gang that cheated money by pretending to be a teacher and making phone calls to selected houses of school children saying the child was sick and admitted to a private hospital were arrested by Police.

They are accused of fraudulently taking money from parents for life-saving emergency operations for the children. A 25-year-old Air Force deserter who resides in Methmalgama, Millatthewa, Girandurukotte is among the suspects. The other suspect is a 37-year-old person, resident of Jayanthipura, Hobariya, Girandurukotte.

Earlier, Pamunugama Police arrested a suspect involved in this gang of deceiving parents and extorting money.That person is also a resident of Girandurukotte. Investigations have revealed that the money obtained by intimidating the parents has been credited to the person’s account. Investigations have revealed that these traffickers have got more than Rs. 2.5 million credited to their bank accounts by making phone calls to the parents of schoolchildren residing in Gampaha, Ja-Ela, Kandana, Pamunugama, Weeragula, Pugoda and Peradeniya Police divisions.

A few days ago, a television channel reported that these suspects were crediting money to a bank account located in Girandurukotte. Girandurukotte Police OIC IP Sudesh Chaturanga, focused attention to a person residing in Girandurukotte who was caught threatening the parents of a university student residing in Minuwangoda and demanding Rs. 50,000 a year and a half ago. Surveillance revealed that the concerned person was missing from the house after the news was broadcast.

The suspect was arrested on November 17 evening and based on the information revealed during the questioning, the Air Force deserter was arrested.

During the questioning of the arrested main suspect, he said that he makes random calls to landlines. He also told the Police that family information would be obtained in the same way as information is obtained for a survey. Then he used the information for the prank.

After presenting these two suspects to the Mahiyangana Magistrate’s Court on Saturday (18), they were remanded till Wednesday (22) and ordered to be produced before the Welisara Magistrate’s Court.
