Two Indian trawlers apprehended for poaching in Lankan waters

The Northern Naval Command deployed Fast Attack Craft of the Command and Coast Guard to apprehend a cluster of Indian trawlers engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters off the Delft Island, in the wee hours of yesterday (8). The operation resulted in the seizure of 2 Indian trawlers and the arrest of 8 Indian fishermen, who continued to remain in Sri Lankan waters.

The seized trawlers along with the 8 Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai harbour to be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings. With this recent seizure, the Navy and Coast Guard have seized a total of 70 Indian trawlers and 537 Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters in 2024.
