Two Thai nationals were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while allegedly attempting to smuggle cannabis known as “Kush” and hashish valued at over Rs.51 million into Sri Lanka.
Customs Narcotics Control Unit officers intercepted the suspects at the arrival terminal after they tried to pass through the Green Channel designated for passengers with nothing to declare.
The suspects, aged 23 and 39, are reported to be butchers employed at a meat market in Thailand. They had arrived in Sri Lanka around midnight aboard Thai Airways flight TG‑307 from Bangkok.
Upon inspection of their luggage, officials discovered 4.496 kilograms of Kush concealed inside 16 vitamin containers, along with 641 grams of hashish wrapped in polythene and disguised to resemble blackcurrant paste.
The seized narcotics, valued at Rs.51,370,000, and the suspects have been handed over to the Katunayake Airport Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation. (Newswire)
