Two undergrads arrested for using Dark Web to commit credit card fraud

The Additional Magistrate of Colombo remanded two students from a private university till August 14 over their alleged involvement in a scheme where unauthorised foreign credit card information, obtained via the Dark Web, was used to fraudulently purchase goods worth over Rs. 1.8 million from a private company’s online platform.

The suspects accessed credit card details of individuals from various countries through the Dark Web and used this information to place orders on a private company’s online platform under the guise of being foreign nationals.

The goods were then shipped to Negombo, and the payments were made using the foreign credit cardholders’ bank accounts.

Following a complaint by a private company to the Welikada Police, an investigation revealed that the person responsible for distributing the goods had provided information about the two suspects.
