Releasing water for agricultural activities from the Udawalawa reservoir started yesterday.
With the release of water from Samanalawewa Reservoir to Udawalawa Reservoir the water level of the Udawalawa reservoir which had dipped to around 0.3 percent of the capacity rose to 1.2 percent by yesterday.
Meanwhile, following a lengthy drought heavy rains were reported from several parts of the country. Heavy rains were reported from Badulla, Bandarawela, Haliela, Moneragala and Kithulgala areas. An ice rain was reported from the Moneragala area. The Meteorology Department said showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Mullaitivu district during the evening or night.
A few showers will occur in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
