British Labour MP Gareth Thomas has launched a petition calling for direct flights between London and Jaffna International Airport to improve travel connections for British Tamils with family and cultural ties to Northern Sri Lanka.
The petition, titled “Bring Direct Flights to Jaffna,” highlights the difficulties faced by British Tamil families travelling to Jaffna for weddings, funerals, religious festivals and family visits.
Thomas, who represents Harrow West, said there are currently no direct flights between London and Jaffna, forcing passengers to travel through Colombo and undertake an additional journey of approximately 400 kilometres.
According to the petition, the onward journey from Colombo to Jaffna takes approximately six to seven hours by road or rail, creating particular difficulties for elderly passengers, families with young children and those travelling for important family occasions.
The proposed direct service aims to reduce travel times, improve accessibility and strengthen family, cultural and community connections between the UK and Northern Sri Lanka.
The petition also highlights the potential benefits for tourism, investment and economic development in the Northern Province.
Thomas is calling on the UK Government, Sri Lankan authorities, airlines and London airports to work together to explore and support a commercially viable direct flight service between London and Jaffna International Airport.
The campaign invites members of the public to sign the petition in support of efforts to establish the proposed air connection. (Newswire)
