The UK government has announced a nationwide crackdown on public transport antisocial behaviour, under which bus passengers in England who play loud music could face fixed penalty fines of up to £100.
The proposed measures seek to address issues such as playing loud audio, littering, vaping, and threatening behaviour across public transport systems. Under newly introduced guidance, local authorities in England are being granted powers to impose penalties on bus offenders, subject to final approval by the Transport Secretary. Enforcement on buses will be handled by authorized personnel, including Transport Safety Officers and police officers, rather than bus drivers.
Alongside bus measures, the government is launching a national awareness campaign titled “share the carriage, not the noise” to remind rail passengers of existing laws against playing loud music and singing, which carry fines of up to £1,000 or removal from trains for non-compliance. While transport campaigners and public surveys indicate widespread disapproval of loudcasting, questions remain regarding how authorities will effectively enforce the new rules in practice.
