United Nations representative in Sri Lanka Mark Andre Franche said that the support provided to the country’s agriculture sector by organizations affiliated to the UN will continue.
Franche gave this assurance to Agriculture and Plantations Minister Mahinda Amaraweera when they met at the Ministry yesterday (23) to discuss the future goals of the agriculture sector.
Commenting on this, the Minister said that in the last three cropping seasons, organizations like the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) had provided a lot of support.
Fertilizer, fuel and financial assistance were given to farmers to increase the contribution of agriculture to economic stability, especially during the economic crisis.
The Minister also mentioned that the assistance was a great relief to the farmers and that the Government expressed its gratitude to the United Nations and its affiliated institutions for their efforts in this regard.
The UN representative said that he will take steps to further extend the support of his organization as well as its affiliated organizations to Sri Lanka.
He also stated that priority will be given to areas such as environmental development, water management, protection of crops from climate change, and introduction of agricultural technology.
A group of officials including Janaka Dharmakirthi, Secretary of the Agriculture and Plantation Industries Ministry, also participated in the meeting.
