UNFPA hails increasing women representation in Sri Lankan politics

The representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Sri Lanka, Kunle Adeniyi yesterday conveyed appreciation for the increasing representation of women in Sri Lankan politics. He also reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to supporting the country in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The UNFPA representative made these remarks when he called on Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at the Prime Minister’s office.

He also reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to supporting the country in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Dr. Amarasuriya emphasised the critical role of gender equality, women’s economic engagement, addressing gender-based violence, and improving nutrition for women and girls in Sri Lanka. She also highlighted that while women’s participation in education is at a satisfactory level, there remains a pressing need to enhance their involvement in decision-making roles.

Partnerships and Advocacy Analyst Anushika Amarasinghe, and National Programme Analyst – Gender/GBV Bimali Amarasekara were present at the meeting representing UNFPA in Sri Lanka. Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister Mahinda Gunarathne and United Nations and Human Rights’ Director Dilini Gunasekara were also attended.
