The United National Party celebrated its 78th anniversary at a ceremony held at party headquarters – Sirikotha under the patronage of UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene and senior leaders of the party. The ceremony started with the garlanding of the portrait of founder of the party and former Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake and other senior party leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, UNP Assistant Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that the United National Party (UNP) always rebuilt the country and strengthened its economy every time whenever the country was in crisis.
He added that the UNP established on September 6, 1946, at the Palm Court House in Guilford Crescent, Colombo, is a very strong party that has done a lot of work for this country.
“When the UNP fell, the country also fell. When the UNP rose, the country also rose. In 1970, the UNP fell. Then, the country too fell. The country moved forward when the UNP came into power in 1977”, he said.
