Upcountry train service hit by fresh landslip hours after derailment repairs

A mound of earth collapsed onto the railway track in the Agunawala area between the Peradeniya and Geli Oya railway stations at around 6:20 p.m. today.

Railway Transportation Superintendent Asanka Samarasinghe stated that necessary measures are being taken to clear the obstruction expeditiously.

Meanwhile, the morning office train traveling from Peradeniya to Colombo derailed this morning (05) in the Gangoda area. This occurred due to a mound of earth and rocks collapsing onto the track and obstructing the line. The Upcountry railway line suffered severe damage from the heavy rain conditions that occurred with Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025.

Accordingly, Upcountry trains running from Colombo were halted at Rambukkana.

Following repair work on the remaining damaged section over a period of about 10 months, train operations from Colombo Fort to Gampola were ceremonially recommenced on October 2.

Accordingly, as today marked the first day of the workweek, the first office train carrying passengers departed Peradeniya railway station for Colombo Fort at 4:35 a.m.

However, it derailed between Ihala Kotte, Kadigamuwa and Gangoda.

A mound of earth and rocks had fallen onto the railway track, and as it was not visible to the driver, the train engine and one carriage derailed, causing the accident.

At that moment, all passengers reached the Kadigamuwa bus route via bypass roads.

The Railway Department took steps to deploy an additional train from Rambukkana this morning for the passengers who arrived at Rambukkana by bus from there.

Meanwhile, after removing the earth and rocks that had fallen onto the track and restoring the line, train operations from Rambukkana to Peradeniya resumed this afternoon.

Accordingly, two trains operated today: one from Colombo Fort to Gampola at 4:35 p.m. and another from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya at 5:15 p.m.

In the midst of these developments, it was reported that another mound of earth collapsed onto the railway line at around 6:20 p.m. today in the Agunawala area between the Peradeniya and Geli Oya railway stations. (Newswire)
