“Urgent measures needed to protect schoolchildren from drug peddlers”

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that a separate force is needed to save schoolchildren from drug dealers.

He said this while addressing the Parliamentary Conference for Children on Friday (25).

The Opposition Leader said that the country’s children and school system have become extremely dangerous due to drug trafficking and parents complain about it when he visits urban and rural schools. Drug traffickers have infiltrated the school system and reach schoolchildren through methods like mobile wallets.

“Therefore, there is a need for an urgent programme to distance drugs from the school system and schoolchildren. There is a need for a strict legal system and programme against drug trafficking, which is targetting children, and there is a need to create a separate force to protect schoolchildren,” he said.

The Opposition Leader further said, “We need to know to what extent children’s rights in our country have been translated into legal provisions and it is suggested that in addition to those children’s rights, a separate unit for mother’s rights should be added to the fundamental rights. Since mothers and children are a vulnerable section of our society, they should be included in the basic rights through a Constitutional amendment.”
