US charity donates cancer drugs worth over US$ one million

Latter-day Saint (LDS) Charities, the Humanitarian arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the United States yesterday donated a consignment of cancer drugs worth over one million US dollars to the Ministry of Health.

Asia Area Welfare and Self-Reliance Director at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Mickey Lui officially handed over the stock of drugs to the Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana at the Ministry of Health.

The agreement with regard to this grant was signed at the Health Ministry yesterday. Secretary to the Health Ministry Dr. Palitha Mahipala signed the agreement on behalf of the Government while Asia Area Welfare and Self-Reliance Director at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Mickey Lui signed on behalf of LDS Charities.

This consignment of essential cancer drug stock includes 13 types of drugs and under the first phase, this stock of essential cancer drugs given to the Ministry of Health is sufficient for one year of cancer treatment in this country.

Under the second phase, the agency has planned to deliver another stock of medicines needed by the country in the next few months.

This cancer drug stock includes Abiraterone Acetate-250 mg tablet, Anastrozole 1 mg tablet, Capecitabine 50mg tablet, Carboplatin 450mg/45ml Vial 450mg Injection, Ciplatin 50mg /50ml vial 50mg Injection, Dacarbazine 200mg vial 200mg Injection, Docetaxel 4mg Vial 80mg Injection, Docetaxel 80mg/4mg Vial 80mg Injection, Irrinotican 100mg/5ml Vial 80mg Injection includes other types of pills and injections.

Speaking here, Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said that the health service in Sri Lanka is a very excellent service and that it provides excellent health service to the people of Sri Lanka as a primary, secondary and tertiary service. It was also emphasized that in the face of the Covid crisis and in the face of the current economic crisis, all the health staff are working with great dedication to maintain a good health service in this country.

The foreign representatives said that even in the face of the current problems, they express their gratitude for the efforts of the current Health Minister to solve the problems and provide excellent health services to the people by providing good leadership to the Health Ministry.

The foreign delegation expressed their willingness to contribute to the future development of the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, which is the main cancer treatment hospital in the country. Earlier, LDS Charities (USA) provided 570 special wheelchairs, 400 mobility aids, and 410 prosthetic items to this country for the use of spinal cord injury patients. The institution spent 70 million rupees for this.

The equipment was distributed to Ragama Hematology and Rehabilitation Hospital, Polonnaruwa Jayantipura Hospital, Kandy Digana Hospital, Lady Ridgway Hospital, Galle Maliban Rehabilitation Centre, Badulla Candagolla Rehabilitation Centre, Vavuniya Rehabilitation Centre as required by the Ministry of Health.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, Director of Medical Supply Division Specialist Dr. Dedunu Dias, LDS Charities (USA) International Institute Representive Elder Johnson also participated on this occasion.
