US delegation commends Sri Lanka’s progress in mine clearance, pledges continued support

A visiting US delegation supporting demining operations has commended the progress of Sri Lanka’s national mine action programme, reaffirming continued American financial and technical backing to help the island nation become landmine free.

The appreciation was conveyed during a meeting held at the Parliament premises yesterday (13). The U.S. government has supported Sri Lanka’s national demining efforts since their inception and has allocated USD 8.5 million for these activities in 2026.

Addressing the delegation, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe stated that ongoing US financial and technical assistance remains crucial to expedite the completion of the programme.

He highlighted that only 20.51 sqkm of land currently remain to be cleared, reiterating the government’s objective to clear the remaining area as swiftly as possible to achieve a mine-free Sri Lanka.

The discussion also covered future operational plans for Sri Lanka’s mine clearance initiatives. The meeting was attended by members of the U.S. Congressional staff, representatives from HALO USA, HALO Trust Sri Lanka, the Eleanor Crook Foundation, as well as the Ministry Secretary and senior ministry officials.
