Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, accompanied by First Lady Susan Gianforte and a delegation from the US state of Montana, is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka tomorrow (09) to strengthen agricultural trade and defence cooperation between the two countries.
According to a statement issued by the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, the visit aims to expand opportunities for American agricultural exports while deepening security cooperation through the Montana National Guard’s State Partnership Program.
Montana, located in the northwestern United States, is a leading American producer of pulses, including chickpeas, lentils and dry peas.
During the visit, the delegation is expected to meet Sri Lankan pulse importers and traders to explore new markets for Montana-grown agricultural products, expand opportunities for American farmers and strengthen commercial ties with Sri Lankan businesses.
US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Eric Meyer welcomed the upcoming visit, highlighting its importance in strengthening economic and security cooperation.
“From Montana’s farms to Sri Lanka’s Indian Ocean shores, this partnership connects economic opportunity with shared security,” Ambassador Meyer said.
Meanwhile, Brigadier General Trenton Gibson, Montana’s Adjutant General and Commander of the Montana National Guard, will accompany the delegation to advance defence cooperation under the State Partnership Program, which has linked Montana and Sri Lanka since 2021.
In 2025, the Montana National Guard and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise and expand cooperation in disaster response, maritime domain awareness and professional military education.
The US Embassy said the Governor’s visit is expected to further strengthen cooperation in disaster preparedness, maritime security and military training, while creating new opportunities for agricultural trade between the two countries. (Newswire)
