The Urban Settlement Development Authority, which was proposed to be abolished by the State Review Committee, will now continue to operate only within the original parameters that were formulated at its inception.
The related Cabinet paper was approved by the Cabinet. This was submitted to the Cabinet as a joint cabinet paper signed by both Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.
It had been proposed either this institute be abolished or attached to the Urban Development Authority by the State Expenditure Committee appointed by President Ranil Wickramasinghe as the Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies Minister.
The related Committee report had been submitted to the Cabinet earlier and it had been approved.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as the Minister of Finance Economic Stabilization and National Policies, has expressed his agreement with the joint cabinet paper submitted with observations regarding the further running of the relevant institution.
The Cabinet has decided that the Urban Settlements Development Authority should withdraw from the functions implemented by the Urban Development Authority and the National Housing Development Authority assigned by the Act. The Cabinet has decided to direct the Secretary of the Minister of Urban Development and Housing to take the necessary steps in this regard.
The Urban Settlement Development Authority implements many projects and programmes to improve the quality of life of the low-income community living in the local government areas that have been declared as urban areas by providing housing solutions.
