The Public Administration Ministry states that public sector employees who have taken long leave and have gone abroad for work or other needs and have not returned to work after the leave or an extension of the leave period will be considered to have vacated their post.
The Ministry has informed the state agencies through a circular that they should be issued the notice for vacation of post immediately and should not be allowed to report back to work.
This step has been taken after it was revealed that some officers who have taken leave under the special arrangements given during the economic crisis period of 2022 have not reported back to work.
Public Administration Ministry Secretary Pradeep Yasaratne has informed the Ministerial Secretaries, Provincial Chief Secretaries and Department Heads to immediately issue notices that the posts are vacant if the officers have not returned to work after their leave period is over.
The ministry states that if an official who applies for an extension of leave from abroad has any problem with the approval of the same, and if it is observed that the problem cannot be solved before the end of the first leave period, the concerned official should be informed to report back to work immediately.
A warning has also been issued that if an institution fails to take action against such persons, disciplinary action shall be taken against the officers who fail to take action in accordance with the regulations.
