Vavuniya politico reported for posting ballot in social media

A complaint was filed on Thursday (5) against a local politician in Vavuniya for posting a photograph of a marked postal voting ballot paper on his social media page.

The individual in question is a member of the Central Committee of the EPRLF (Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front) and allegedly committed the act while at a postal voting centre for state employees in Vavuniya.

It remains unclear from which postal voting centre the marked ballot was photographed. The Vavuniya Assistant Election Commissioner’s Office stated that the exact centre would only be disclosed following an investigation into the incident.

The photograph posted on social media reportedly depicts an official postal ballot marked in favour of the Tamil common candidate P. Ariyanethiran.Complaints regarding this incident have been lodged with the Vavuniya Election Office and the European Union election observers, who are in the region to monitor the electoral process.
