A vessel under restoration, anchored at Galle Harbour has sunk, Galle Police said.
The vessel “Nostamo” originally belonged to a foreign country, but had been abandoned in Sri Lankan waters and then been retrieved and brought to Galle Port. Subsequently the vessel on Court Order had been auctioned and it had been bought by a private firm and was under repair at Galle Port.
However, sea water had seeped into the vessel while being repaired, resulting in its subsequent sinking.
There had been around 600 litres diesel fuel in the sunken ship and the SL Navy and Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) have jointly initiated measures to avert the leakage of diesel fuel into the sea.
