Vidullanka PLC, a leader in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy space, was honoured by President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Presidential Environment Awards held on June 28.
The Gold Award was awarded to Batathota Mini Hydro Power Plant of Vidullanka PLC for excellent contribution towards environmental conservation in the renewable energy sector, marking the second consecutive year the company received this distinction.
The Silver Award was also won by another plant in Vidullanka’s portfolio, the Ethamala Ella Mini Hydro Power Plant.
The Presidential Environmental Awards, organised annually by the Central Environmental Authority, celebrates organizations and individuals dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainable production practices.
These achievements by Vidullanka highlight the company’s resounding commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. The winning plants embody Vidullanka’s Sustainable Living Plan, which focuses on maximizing energy generation while minimizing environmental impact.
CEO Riyaz Sangani said; “We are honoured that Vidullanka has received these awards from the CEA, as it reaffirms our proficiency in providing sustainable energy solutions. As a pioneering renewable energy company, we prioritize sustainability in our activities and devote our resources to the conservation of the environment. This is derived from a strong belief that by developing indigenous energy sources, our industry can lead Sri Lanka towards a greater degree of energy security and independence”.
Director of Operations Roshan Siriwardana stated; “Over the past decade, these plants have utilized innovative technologies such as automated mechanisms to improve power generation, thereby enhancing energy conservation. Furthermore, focused efforts are made to protect the catchment areas, reduce CO2 emissions through reforestation and waste-management programs that has significantly cut landfill waste while cleaning the rivers.”
Some of these efforts include a long-term reforestation initiative that aims to plant and sustain 100,000 trees by 2025, with just over 70,000 trees planted to date. Vidullanka is also carrying out a project clearing invasive plants that negatively impact the biodiversity of Bundala National Park.
These accolades, along with having just recently been accredited with the ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management, serve as testament to Vidullanka PLC’s continued efforts towards excellence in its mission to sustainably energize the planet.
