An official of Indian actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party has been arrested in Tamil Nadu over an alleged operation to smuggle a large quantity of methamphetamine into Sri Lanka by sea.
The suspect has been identified as N. Boopalan, 42, a member of the TVK Nagapattinam district executive committee.
According to Indian media reports, Boopalan was among four individuals apprehended following intelligence received about a suspected drug-smuggling operation in Nagapattinam.
Indian authorities reportedly seized approximately 100 kilograms of methamphetamine during the operation.
Security officials launched raids at around 6 a.m. on October 16 after receiving information about plans to transport narcotics from Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka.
Investigators searched the residence of one suspect before conducting a separate raid at Boopalan’s residence, identifying him as an alleged key figure in the operation.
Reports also indicated that Boopalan’s wife is a Sri Lankan national, a connection investigators are examining as part of their inquiries into the suspected smuggling network.
The seized drugs were reportedly transported from Chennai and stored for distribution in parts of Tamil Nadu and possible smuggling to Sri Lanka.
Following the operation, the suspects and seized narcotics were taken to the Nagapattinam Customs Office for further investigation.
Meanwhile, TVK Nagapattinam district secretary M. Sugumaran announced that Boopalan had been expelled from the party’s primary membership and all positions over his alleged involvement in drug trafficking and conduct contrary to party principles. (Newswire)
