Wanted criminal who feigned suicide arrested after years

The Makulugaswewa Police have arrested a man involved in a number of crimes who is believed to have died after setting himself on fire several years ago. On October 29, 2021, the Habarana Police found a body of a person who was burnt to death.

Police also found a letter near the body apparently from the dead person. In the letter a person named Sudesh Ilangasinghe (27) a resident of Palugaswewa had said he was committing suicide.

At that time there were several warrants for his arrest for various crimes.

Meanwhile, Sudesh Ilangasinghe, who is said to had committed suicide was arrested by Mukulugaswewa police officers on April 6 while posing under a different name.

It was during an investigation based on a complaint made to the police by his friend that this person had obtained a mobile phone SIM card using his wife’s national identity card.

During questiong the suspect has admitted he was Illangasinghe. He has said that the burnt body was of a beggar who was killed by him and his friend (the person who later complained to the police about his wife’s ID car being used by the suspect). However, the suspects friend has told the police that Illangasinghe is lying to involve him in murder and the burnt body had been dug up from a grave in the cemetery. The police are investigating.
