A controversial umpiring decision during India’s T20 international against Japan on Tuesday, September 22, has sparked criticism after a wide-ball call was overturned following protests from Indian players.
Japan were closing in on a historic victory against India in the rain-shortened five-over match when the incident occurred.
With Japan needing five runs from four deliveries, a ball from Indian spinner Axar Patel was initially called wide by the umpire.
However, Indian players protested the decision, after which the umpire reversed the call, prompting questions over the circumstances surrounding the reversal.
Cricket journalist Ben Gardner criticised the incident on social media, accusing India of pressuring the officials into changing their decision.
“With five off four needed for the biggest upset in cricket history, India have just bullied the umpires into overturning a wide call against Japan. Genuinely disgraceful,” Gardner wrote.
India had earlier been restricted to 32 for four in their five overs, leaving Japan with a target of 33 runs.
