Water tariffs to reduce based on tariff formula

Cabinet approval has been granted to reduce the water tariffs based on the tariff formula.

Accordingly, the water tariff of domestic users is to be reduced by seven percent, government hospitals by 4.5 percent, schools and religious places of worship by 6.3 percent.

Speaking to the media yesterday at the Government Information Department, Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana stated that the decision was taken according to the agreement reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has been implementing the existing water billing system since January 8, 2023 and the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers has been granted at their meeting held on July 15, 2024 to implement the charges policy and matrix to review those charges.

Since the Ceylon Electricity Board has deducted their electricity charges since July 16, 2024 and considering that the cost of fuel, chemicals and interest cost have declined, the water charges can be deducted for some percentage. Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to the resolution furnished by the Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Facilities Minister to revise water charges.
