Wavgam Programme to be completed next year

The CRIWMP or Wavgam Pubuduwa Programme implemented in Anuradhapura Puttlam, Kurunegala, Vavuniya, Mannar, Trinco and Polonnaruwa districts due to be completed in December 2025. This project aims to strengthen the resilience of smallholder farmers in dry zones particularly women community to climate variability and extreme events. The Irrigation Ministry implemented the Wavgam Pubuduwa with funds being extended by Green Climate Fund while the technical support provided by UNDP.

The Project Director Chandana Edirisooriya told the Daily News that the GCF grants US$ million 38.08 with the Sri Lanka Government investing US$ million 14 towards the implementation of the project. According to him since September 2017 up to September 2024 already a sum of US$ million 41.06 has been spent to realise the project components such as upgrading village irrigation system, enhancing decentralised water supply and management solutions and strengthening climate/weather and hydrological observing for casting to enhance adaptive capacity of small-scale farmers to drought and floods. He pointed out that so far cumulative physical and financial progress being made respectively have been 91 percent and 83 percent. The CRIWMP directly benefits 780, 200 people living in the three rivers basins; Mi Oya, Malwathu Oya and Yan Oya through investment in irrigation, drinking water and disaster risk management and also a further 1,158,000 people are indirectly benefitted from the project interventions mainly in climate capacity building and early warning systems for climate resilience.
