The 20th General Conference of World Buddhist Sangha Youth (WBSY) and 5th General Conference of World Alliance of Buddhist (WAB) were held at Nagadeepa Purana Raja Maha Viharaya from June 21 to 22, 2024, under the patronage of the Chief Incumbent of the Nagadeepa Purana Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Nawadagala Padumakiththi Tissa Thera and Secretary General of WBSY, most Ven. Mugunuwela Anuruddha Thera and under guidance of the WAB President Ven. Dr. Pornchai Pinyapong Thera, Thailand, Dr. Lye Ket Yong – Secretary General and the Sri Lanka Navy as well as Sri Lanka Army played a crucial role in facilitating the successful conduct of these significant events.
Main theme of the conference was bringing out the best Dhamma practice in order to build the peace and Dhamma bridges around the globe uniting with all the Buddhist sects under one and the same umbrella for world happiness.
A delegation comprising of 37 Theras and 201 devotees from 24 countries, including representatives from Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, China, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Taiwan, Nepal, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. This event serves as a message to the world that Sri Lanka is a country enjoying peace and stability. Sinhala as well as Tamil people from the Jaffna, Dhamma schoolchildren also participated in this conference.
WAB was truly honoured and delighted to have had Buddhist, Religious & Culture Affairs Minister Vidura Wickramanayaka, of Sri Lanka, who attended GBC 5 and delivered a thought-provoking and deeply inspirational speech on the future of Buddhism.
The delegation along with the Ven. Theras, attended the evening chanting at the Sri Naga Viharaya, Jaffna on June 21 by first making a visit to the Jaffna peninsula and June 22nd was the main conference. The Chief Incumbent of Sri Nagavihara Temple and the Commander, Security Forces (Jaffna), warmly welcomed the delegation to Jaffna.
Following the directives of Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the Commander of the Navy, proceedings of these events were looked after by Rear Admiral Rohitha Abeysinghe, the Commander Northern Naval Area and Major General Wickramasinghe RWP RSP NDU PSC, the Commander Security Forces (Jaffna), attended both occasions as a distinguished guest.

Dhamanag – Senior Advisor, Sanjay Moktan – Senior Advisor, Ven. Phra Khru Verrachaiyanuwat, Phra Baidika Adcha, PhraKhru Adisaiworawat, Teerapat, Sililuk Sumana including most Ven. Thera and 201 devotees present at the conference. Along with the event on 24th day the Dansal, Books and school stationery were donated to children in Jaffna and the closing ceremony was held at Anuradha Arana temple and on the 25th day the delegation paid homage and their respect to the lord Buddha’s sacred tooth relic at Sri Dalada Maligawa Kandy and finally the delegation enlightens from Maha Nayaka Theras of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapter from Malwatta Chaptered Mahanayaka most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera and Siyam Nikaya’s Malwatta Chapter’s Anunayaka most Ven. Dimbulkumburey Wimaladhamma Thera.
