Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that while the NPP’s victory is drawing near, opposition political parties are resorting to rumour mongering instead of clarifying their policies.
He made these remarks yesterday (11) during a media conference by the National People’s Power (NPP) held at the JVP headquarters in Pelawatta, Battaramulla.
He further said, “As the Presidential Election approaches, reports from across the country indicate that our candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake is poised for victory. As this victory nears, opposition parties, instead of clarifying their policies, are employing various tactics to instill fear in the country.
“In the final days of the campaign, they have planned to intensify these strategies by spreading outright lies and baseless allegations. We have responded to these slanders, and in some instances, have even taken legal action.
“One such claim is that if Anura Kumara wins, he won’t be able to govern the country for even six months, with predictions of large-scale bloodshed. Initially, people who claimed we couldn’t even secure three percent of the vote, are now, accepting the possibility of our victory, and are now resorting to mudslinging, referencing the era of Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
“We are not aiming to run the country into a crisis in six months. We have policies and plans, and a vast public mandate behind us to implement them. A significant portion of the public is rallying around us not only to establish our government but also to safeguard it and help rebuild the nation. Anura Kumara is not an empty character like Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He has over 24 years of Parliamentary experience, where he has demonstrated his competence and leadership, holding various responsibilities.
“Furthermore, he is not a solitary figure; he is supported by a well-organised and strong movement that will establish a stable, powerful government capable of rebuilding this country.
“The era of long queues in the country was created largely due to the extensive foreign borrowing in 2015 and 2019. On the other hand, those primarily responsible for creating the queues were part of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government. Now, where are they? Some are with Sajith, and a majority are with Ranil.
“The public has rallied in large numbers around Anura Kumara. Despite our setback of only securing three percent in the previous election, we have been steadily organising without haste to ensure victory at the upcoming election. We will not allow anyone to tarnish, smear, or undermine our Presidential Election victory. After the election, all those who voted for the ‘Compass’ and those who voted for other parties will unite with us to rebuild the country.”
