President Trade Union DG Saman Ratnapriya said that the recommendations adopted in the 108th session of the International Labour Organization (ILO) should be implemented in our country also.
To this effect, Ratnapriya stated that there should be a collective agreement to implement the “Recommendations to eradicate violence and abuse in the workplace” in our country as well.
The Director General said this at a one-day workshop to inform the working community on the implementation of the C-190 recommendations related to the eradication of violence and abuse in the workplace.
This awareness workshop was organized by the Solidarity Centre, which works to inform the working people of Sri Lanka about the recommendations of the ILO. Employees from various professions including health, banking, ports, education, and media participated in this workshop.
Ratnapriya, who gave a special speech at this workshop held in Colombo, recently said that we all are duty bound to work aiming to eliminate violence and abuse in the world of work. International recommendations about them should be implemented within our country. There should be awareness, discussion and debates about them in the workplace. Psychiatrist Counsellor Sunetra Dissanayake said that gender-based violence and abuse should be prevented in the workplace. No one should suffer physical or mental abuse of their own. She said that high productivity and efficiency cannot be expected in a workplace with mental pressure and violence.
“The ILO presents new rules and recommendations from time to time. They are very important for the labour community. One such very important recommendation is the C-190 recommendations. The Government is committed to implementing them in our country. We must become a country that is interested in that and accepts those recommendations. That is why these notifications are made,” senior lecturer on international labour laws Dr. Padmasiri Ranawaka Arachchi said.
