We need a new Constitution – Cardinal

Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that the need for a new Constitution has arisen to ensure democratic governance.

He pointed out that a new Constitution should be made to create a strong mechanism to investigate the corrupt practices committed against democracy in the past.

He was speaking to the media following a meeting with Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne in Colombo yesterday.

“It is important to uncover the truth behind the Easter attacks. We need to find out who did this and for what reason. A comprehensive investigation should be done to identify with whose help this was done.

A lot of these things have happened in Sri Lanka in the past. There has been no proper investigation into murders, disappearances, etc. It is our request that a mechanism be prepared to investigate all the corrupt acts committed against democracy. It requires the necessary structural change. There should be a new constitution to overcome the many weaknesses in the existing Constitution. We have hope that it will be done,” he added.
