Weather alert: Heavy rains expected across Sri Lanka from Tuesday evening

Showery conditions across Sri Lanka are expected to intensify from the evening of Tuesday, October 20, due to the development of an atmospheric disturbance in the lower atmosphere near the island, the Department of Meteorology warned.

In its 36-hour weather forecast issued at 4 p.m. on October 19, the department said showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of the country after 1 p.m.

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely in some areas of the Northern, North Central, Central and Uva provinces, as well as Trincomalee district.

Morning showers are also expected in coastal areas of the Western and Northern provinces and Puttalam district.

The department warned of temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers, urging the public to take necessary precautions.

Misty conditions are also expected in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.
